To begin, welcome to my Coach Profile on Figure Skating Coach Richard Laidlaw!
I had the pleasure of interviewing Richard over Skype but rather than just show you the interview, first i’ll talk about who Richard is and what he has achieved.
If you want a preview of the questions I ask Richard, scroll to the bottom check out the interview notes.
Fascinated by ice, at the age of 14 – Richard commissioned and built his own ice rink.
This was probably a good indication of the Entrepreneur he would become.
Like most renowned coaches, Richard started his career as a competitive Figure Skater.
Competing in State and National events, Richard won State Championship titles in Juvenile, Novice & Junior.
As a result, he went onto tour internationally, skating in ice shows or performing on stages.
Richard worked with companies such as Disney, Warner Bros and Hollywood on Ice.
This gave him valuable insights into show-business and provided the foundations needed to identify other talent and become a show Producer.
In addition, he’s built portable and pop up ice rinks around the world, catering to Ice Shows and the public.
Becoming a Coach
After 10 years of successful tours Richard focussed his attention towards coaching in Adelaide, working with skaters from beginner to elite.
Further more, his students have won State and National titles, competed on the international competition circuit and most of all – represented Australia at the ISU Junior World Championships.
Always building his knowledge Richard believes you can never stop learning, regularly attending camps and workshops in Australia and overseas.
I am consistently reminded by Richard’s commitment to this; he is always urging those around him to see the value in continually learning, acting as a role model and staying true to his core beliefs.
This is a noteworthy trait that I admire and one of the key reasons why I asked him to do an interview.
As an Australian Level 3 coach, Richard believes coaching skating goes far beyond the ice, he is a coach, mentor, friend and confidant to his students.
His approach shapes and molds an athlete, his philosophy is based around teaching his skaters a clear understanding of the mechanics for edges, jumps and spins.
He then places an emphasis on developing his skater’s planning and goal setting, fostering a clear understanding of the competition, rules, training requirements and performance drivers.
Richard’s approach is especially relevant because it has worked well for him, consequently producing many champions.
Richard’s motto is: Dream big and make it happen!
